Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar
mount kailash tihet trekHigh on the remote western Tibetan plateau in the northern region of the Himalayas, situated The Holy Mount Kailash at a height of 6714m (22156 ft) above sea level; The Tibetan people have named it Kang Rinpoche, to the Tibetans as Gang Timpoche (Precious Jewel of Snow), it is indeed a rare opportunity and privilege for all devotees who have been dreaming to be close to the home of the Gods in this world.
Situated to the north of the Himalayan barrier, this legendary snow-surrounded rock dome is revered by four different religions {i.e. for Buddhism, Jainism, Bonpo (a religion prior to Buddhism in Tibet) and Hinduism} as one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in Asia.
For the Hindus Kailash is the Sumeru Parvat, the spiritual center of the world around which all the earthly powers revolve. On top is the abode of their god Shiva Lord of the Mountains, who shares this lofty peak with his consort, Parvati, sprawling below in the scared Manasarovar, where a ritual bath will deliver a pilgrim to Bramha’s paradise and a drink of its waters relinquishes the sins of a hundred lifetimes. A single circumambulation (32 mile / 54 km) around Mount Kailash wipes the sins of a lifetime. For the Buddhists, Kailash is the center point of the universe as well as acclaimed as the site where their first prophet achieved enlightenment. For the Jains, Kailah is the Mount Ashtapada, a very holy place holding many beliefs of pilgrimage. For the Bonpo followers, Kailash is the nine-faced swastika mountain and is constantly emanating great power.
The sources for four of south Asia’s greatest rivers are nearby, and at the base of the mountain are two vast lakes, Mnasarovar (the unconquerable Turquoise Lake; also called Mardo Tsho, the cool lake) and Rakshas Tal (Demon Lake or langka Tsho). From the slopes of Mount Meru a stream is said to pour into Mapham Yamtsho, and from this lake flow four rivers in the four cardinal directions toward the oceans: the Senge Khabab (also Khambab; river from the lion moth) to the north; the Tamchok Khabab (River from the horse mouth) to the east; the Mpacha Khabab (river from the Peacock mouth) to the south; and the langchen Khaab (river from the elephant mouth) to the west. These mythical rivers are now assoicited with the four major rivers originating near Mount Kailash: the Indus, the Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), the Karnali, and the Sutlej, respectively. Kailash is also regarded as the residence of Demchok, a multi-armed, wrathful deity worshipped in the Chakrasamvara Tantric cycle of Tibetan Buddhism, and his consort, Dorje Phakmo. The mountain also has a special association with the poet-saint Milarepa, who spent several years here meditating in caves.
South of Mount Kailash, across the base of the majestic Mount Gurla Mandhata, is the two lakes Mansarovar and Rakkshas Tal (lake). They are the highest bodies of fresh water in the world, with Manasarovar (330 sq. km), at 4,558 meters, about fifteen meters higher than Rakshas Tal. Manasarovar considered by Buddhist and Hindus to be more worthy of veneration. Buddhist believes that Queen Maya, the Buddha\'s mother was carried here by the gods and washed prior to giving birth to the Buddha.
If there are heaven abodes on earth, Mt. Kailash & Manasarovar Lake is to be treasured as the most celestial. Its flames give birth to four great Asian rivers the Indus, Bramaputra, Ganges and Sutlej.
